South America / Argentina & Brazil: Golden Dourado and Subtropical Rainbow Trout
Duration: 8 days, 6 days of fishing, September thru April: $2,995.00 USD /person, minimum 2
There is a state in the southern part of Brazil called Rio Grande do Sul about the size of Montana. This mountainous state is nestled between the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Argentina on the other.
The mountains of Rio Grande do Sul level out into the plains Ibera Marshes in the neighboring Argentina, which is similar to the Florida everglades. One can find Rainbow Trout in the mountain streams of Brazil or travel to the Parana River system some 200 miles to the west for what is commonly refereed to as the Golden Trout, the Dourado.
Some say that the Dourado is the fightingest fresh water fish in the world growing up to over 40 lbs. Many also believe that the Dourado is meaner than the Tiger Fish found in the Zambezi River in Africa yet similar to a North American Steelhead. A great combination of aggressive attacks and spectacular aerobatics are its trademarks.
You'll fly into the main city in the state and the sixth largest in Brazil, Porto Alegre, situated on Brazil’s largest lagoon, the Lagoa dos Patos.
For the first two days you will start your trip fishing for subtropical Rainbow Trout. Accommodation is at the Hotel Veraneio Hampel in the small mountain town of Sao Francisco de Paula. The next four days will take place in the Iberia Marshes of Northern Argentina to battle the mighty Dourado, accommodations are at our comfortable and fully equipped ranch right by the crystal clear waters of the Iberia.
Just south of the Tropic of Capricorn this area has a very temperate climate much like that of California and even gets the occasional snowfall in June and July but the fishing season is for eight months a year, from September through April.
Area attractions include the Itaimbezinho Canyon, in the Aparados da Serra National Park. At 5800 meters of length and 2000 meters wide, this spectacular canyon has rock walls of 700 meters tall covered by vegetation and native pine trees.
